Hellyeah is a heavy metal supergroup based out of Dallas, Texas, USA and formed in the summer of 2006. The band is made up of ex-members of Mudvayne, Nothingface, Pantera and Damageplan and has released a handful of albums since their self-titled debut effort in 2007.
You think about pedigree in rock bands and who do you think of? If it’s not Hellyeah then you’re basically wrong. Unless you’re thinking the only band that surpasses them for sheer name factor, which would be the Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones sideshow Them Crooked Vultures. Hellyeah are up there. Here’s why.
The first seeds of the band were sewn way back in 2000, when Mudvayne and Nothingface toured together as part of Slipknot’s Tattoo The Earth Tour. The latter’s guitarist Tom Maxwell struck up a friendship with the former’s singer Chad Gray and talked about putting a band together. However, both bands were very, very big deals at the time so scheduling conflicts put paid to any collaboration they might have had.
Until 2006, that is. By that point Mudvayne were taking a break and Nothingface were gearing up to record. Both Maxwell and Gray had a free summer, so they set out trying to find a rhythm section for the project, and if any one thing makes Hellyeah a worthy endeavour, it’s their rhythm section. After much cajoling and persuasion, they managed to snag the one and only Vinnie Paul as their drummer and eventually, his Damageplan bandmate Bob Zilla on bass.
The band was set, the album was recorded and there was only one more thing for it, to rock out live and rock out as loud as humanly possible. In their first year on the road they toured with the likes of Korn, Evanescence and Alter Bridge and let people know definitively that they were a real band in it for the long haul and weren’t just some friends messing about on a big stage.
Three albums later and they’re a great metal band in their own right, divorced from anything else its members have been a part of. They’re a no-nonsense bunch of guys playing straight ahead, full steam ahead rock and roll as loud as it’ll go, with as much passion as they can play it with. They’re a true must see for any fan of heavy music.
