Ella Mai In Concert
Ella Mai’s whirlwind 2018 has led to her being one of 2019’s leading live acts. Her fizzy breakout single “Boo’d Up” hit No. 1 on the U.S. R&B Airplay and Adult R&B charts, as well as No. 5 on the Hot 100 — and it sent her from opening for streetwise singer-producer Kehlani’s 2017 SweetSexySavage World Tour to headlining her own run of shows. The Debut Tour crosses North America through May 2019, and she opens for the European leg of Ariana Grande’s Sweetener World Tour in Europe from August to October. Live, she’s full of charisma, running through songs from her 2018 self-titled debut album with charm and verve.
Ella Mai Background
The London-born Mai moved to New York as a teen, then returned to the United Kingdom to study at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute London. After auditioning for the British edition of ‘The X Factor’ as part of a girl band, Mai struck out on her own, uploading an EP to SoundCloud that caught the attention of DJ Mustard. In 2016 and 2017, she released a trilogy of EPs — ‘Time,’ ‘Change,’ and ‘Ready’ — that set the stage for her to take the world by storm with “Boo’d Up,” her sweetly crushed-out breakthrough single. “Boo’d Up” was later remixed to include fast-talking rapper Nicki Minaj and Migos star Quavo, and the song would become particularly popular in the U.S., going quadruple platinum and winning a 2019 Grammy for Best R&B Song. Mai’s self-titled debut album arrived in the fall of 2018, and it was hailed for its blending of classic soul-pop grooves and modern pop production, as well as its guest spots from soul titan John Legend and fellow R&B innovator H.E.R. “Trip,” the follow-up single to “Boo’d Up,” was also a radio smash in the States, topping R&B charts, and Mai became a hot commodity on the vocal-feature market, appearing on tracks by the Philadelphia MC Meek Mill and the Atlanta rapper J.I.D.
