Malvin grew up in Pittsburgh, US, before later attending music school at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, US, where he developed his musical talents. Malvin initially trained as a classical percussionist, with this background in percussion resulting in stints as the drummer for a number of bands, Stepdad, Miniature Tigers and Rich Aucoin. Since leaving university, Malvin has embarked on several tours with these bands, travelling across North America. As well as an interest in percussion, Malivin also developed an obsession with synthesisers, with this reflected in his music, creating lush, beautiful, cascading synth-based arrangements underlined by his energetic beats.
Malvin moved to Brooklyn, US, and began creating music in his bedroom, as well as performing DJ sets. His first release came out in 2011, with the EP, “My <3,” a 7-track record full of expansive synths, samples and mood-altering beats that took you on a musical journey to cosmic realms. The record also featured vocalist Steffaloo, on “All There Is,” offering the perfect showcase for her vocals to stand out over shoegaze-like synths. The most notable song off the record was “Marijuana,” with which Chrome Sparks is best associated with.
Chrome Sparks’ live performances have taken many different incarnations over the course of his career, sometimes featuring just Malvin but also incorporating an eight-piece band, or just with two of his close friends. In 2014, Chrome Sparks made a ‘New Years Resolution’ to spend lunch with a different person everyday, which saw him meet with fans and various other people, hoping that his last lunch date would be actor Bill Murray. Chrome Sparks released his second EP, “Sparks” in 2013 and his third, “Goddess,” in 2014, on Future Classic Records.
