Bobby McFerrin, has pursued many endeavors in his career, which has included writing and recording the huge chart topping hit “Don’t Worry Be Happy”. He is also the recipient of ten Grammy Awards.

McFerrin rose to prominence with the release of his eponymous album, which wasn’t released until 1982. He was aged 32 at the time, claiming that he spent six year prior to recording the album developing his style, making sure that he wouldn’t listen to any other music so he could develop his own style. McFerrin endorses a distinctively recognizable sound where he would perform both the melody and the accompaniment. He has built up a reputation for being skilled at polyphonic singing.

Following his efforts, in 1986 McFerrin was invited to perform at the Playboy Jazz Festival in Los Angeles, being a part of Herbie Hancock’s band. He also featured as the voice of Santa Bear in the film Santa Bear’s First Christmas. It was so well received that he was invited back for the sequel.

It was in 1988 that McFerrin recorded, produced and released the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. The song became a global hit, and McFerrin decided to begin to pursue other aspects of music such as production and arrangement. The song was even involved in George H. W. Bush’s 1988 campaign, as the official song; unfortunately, it was without McFerrin’s permission. He later decided to drop the song from his live set, and openly stated that he would vote against Bush.

1989 saw McFerrin compose the music for a Pixar short film entitled Knick Knack. He would also perform on a recording of “Pink Panther” which would go on to be the main theme song for the movie Son of the Pink Panther. In 1994, to add to his already sterling CV, McFerrin gained the accolade of creative chair of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, with whom he embarks on regular tours around the world. It was in 2009 that McFerrin would feature as a co-host of The Music Instinct, which would go on to be an award winning documentary.
